Is there a way to count the nubmer of files in many many directories conviently?

Without writing scripts to do so.

The keyboard does not feel good now.

I just got my fan of notebook computer changed. It ran down for a long time. The computer got so hot after several minutes running.

However, the keyboard doesn't feel good now. It makes much louder noise to me. Stupid HP nx6330 keyboard quality!

Very unstable internet in office.

The internet in office is very unstable. Sometimes, it is very slow, with only tens of bits per second. And the speed can reach as high as several hundred bytes per second; but don't last for long time. The most weird thing is even the file wasn't downloaded completely, FlashFXP stop downloading and think it has been finished, and also removed it from the queue. That's the worst thing for a correct downloading.

Is ftp.cdc.noaa.gov down?

I cannot login it for several days.

File which stores Solaris Calendar information.

/var/spool/calendar/callog.user
It's a text file.

Cannot get access to Google Blog from yesterday.

It presents great difficulties.

Plot of XIAA positions time series.

Fig. Coordinates time series of XIAA. (top) North; (middle) East; (bottom) Up.
Note, there are a data gap between 140~365/2005. GAMIT failed to get solutions for those days in the 2nd batch run. I don't know why. If it is run day by day, it seems there is no problems.

Offsets in JPLM time series.

There are obviously several jumps in the coordinates of JPLM time series. This series is obtained by combining SIO igs1, igs2 and igs3 H-files.

ASH701945.02B is missing from the latest igs05.atx file.

The latest IGS absolute phase center corrections file [IGSMAIL #5742] came out. ftp://igscb.jpl.nasa.gov/igscb/station/general/igs05.atx

The gamit cannot get information for antanna (ASH701945.02B ) of XIAM site, and stopped proceeding. However, there are records in the old igs_05.atx files. Did they delete them?

Can I install two versions of IDL on the same Linux machine?

RHEL-5:
1. IDL V7.0 (Already installed);
2. IDL V6.4 (Not installed).
I wander whether there is a way to make those two versions of IDL co-exist in one Linux machine. For different user, I think there is no problem. But how to install those two for the same user?

[IGSMAIL-5757]: IGS Analysis Center Workshop 2008 - Call for abstracts for the Reanalysis Session

Dear colleagues,

we would like to remind you to submit contributions (posters) for the
session "Reanalysis Campaign" at the IGS Analysis Center Workshop, 2-6
June 2008, Miami Beach, Florida, USA (see
http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/IGSWorkshop2008)

The deadline for the submissions is 1 May 2008.

You can find a session description below.
Please send authors and title of your contribution to the session chairs:

and a copy to Jim Ray: jimr@ngs.noaa.gov

Best regards
Gerd Gendt

Session Description:

During the IGS history several TRFs were applied and the ACs have
implemented many changes for software and technology improvements; all
led to various inconsistencies in the IGS products. A major change was
the introduction of the absolute antenna models, which entered only with
some approximation into the recent IRTF2005. The IGS has to overcome
these inconsistencies in their time series with a reprocessing of its
historical data since 1994 using the latest models and the latest AC's
software implementations. The improved homogeneous products will allow
better geophysical interpretations and will result in a significantly
better contribution to the next realization of the ITRF. The reanalysis
will also include more stations to better address the requirements of
the user community.

The session will concentrate on all activities related to the IGS
reprocessing. Evaluations of the reprocessing test campaign, which shall
identify problems in an early stage, and first results from the IGS
reprocessing, available up to this IGS Workshop, are welcome. Also
welcome are experiences from any reprocessing activities outside the
IGS, which can give valuable feedback to the IGS reprocessing project.

Problem with zcat, zgrep, gzcat, gzgrep.

The zcat and zgrep works well in RHEL-5. However, zcat (or gzgrep and gzcat) in Sol10X86 behave differently with SIO h-files and local CMON h-files. Moreover, in RHEL-5, I failed to get information from the compressed h-files of CMON experiment. This cross-platform problem seems so complicated. I can't handle this. :(

There are problems with grep of RHEL-5. It said "Binary file (standard input) matches" when using zcat hbjgpa.05001.Z | grep "Number of stations" or zgrep "Number of stations" hbjgpa.05001.Z.

And GAMIT keeps kidding me on GPSDC.

sh_gamit run by each day can obtain solutions for about 32 stations. However, if put it into batch run, it will only got solutions for some 8 sites. I am indeed mad at this!

The head drives me crazy.

The head utility has different behavior on h-files which I generated and SIO supplied. Its -n option works well with SIO h-files, but always returns one more line when dealing with h-files created by local GAMIT run (cmon/bjgp). What the hell is it doing? I don't think the format of those h-files are different. They are all the same, ASCII, unit style line ending. Did I miss someting?

How to get information from GAMIT H-file or SINEX files?

Such information as sites names, coordinates, etc.

Format of mk_pos_ps input map list file.

To plot time series,
mk_pos_ps map.list sites.list output_directory
Actually, mk_pos_ps shell script calls plot_tseries program to do the work.
plot_tseries map.list SITE_GPS 2
This will create a Postscript file SITE.ps in current directory.

Format of map lists file:
[tianyf@tyf ~/tmp]$ cat qoca_map.list
virtual_run.map
That is, just those file names, no total number of files as the first line.

Format of site list file:

There seems a error with mk_pos_ps script:

It is mandatory that there is a blank line at the end of the QOCA driver file. Otherwise, the qoca will stop at an error of fmt string. For example:

Install CATS under Cygwin.

It's a great challenge to install CATS under Cygwin@Windows. Actually, it is very simple. Just follow the below general steps.

a). Install Cygwin with GCC compiler;
b). Compile CLAPACK with gcc;
c). Compile CATS with gcc.

However, there are some tricks to make it work.
For step a), please refer to those instructions on the internet.
Step b).
1. Download the latest clapack.tgz from netbig site. Unpack it.
tar zxvf clapack.tgz
This will create a directory named CLPACK-3.1.1.
2. Change to the CLAPACK-3.1.1 directory, type make to compile, and get a cup of coffee.
cd CLAPACK-3.1.1
make
This will create several static libraries:
CLAPACK-3.1.1/blas_LINUX.a
CLAPACK-3.1.1/F2CLIBS/libf2c.a
CLAPACK-3.1.1/lapack_LINUX.a
CLAPACK-3.1.1/tmglib_LINUX.a
It's done.

Step c). Compile CATS
1. Unpack CATS distribution.
tar zxvf cats_v3.1.2.tar.gz
This will create a cats_v3.1.2 directory.
2. Compile CATS libraries.
First, modify the make.inc files to suit your needs.
make.inc:
####################################################################
# CATS make include file. #
# CATS, Version 2.0 #
# August 16, 2002 #
####################################################################

BINDIR = /home/tianyf/gpsf/cgps/bin
CLAPACK = /home/tianyf/CLAPACK-3.1.1

LAPACKLIB = /home/tianyf/CLAPACK-3.1.1/lapack_LINUX.a
BLASLIB = /home/tianyf/CLAPACK-3.1.1/blas_LINUX.a
F77LIB = /home/tianyf/CLAPACK-3.1.1/F2CLIBS/libf2c.a
#-lF77_LINUX
I77LIB = /home/tianyf/CLAPACK-3.1.1/tmglib_LINUX.a
#-lI77_LINUX

COMPILER = gcc
AR = ar
INSTALL = install
#CFLAGS = -static -g3 -pg -O -Q
CFLAGS = -static -O
#CFLAGS = -O

Second, cd lib/time sub-directories and type make.
It is recommended that first clean the existing files by "make cleaner".

Finally, change to analysis directory, type make to compile the cats program.

That's all.

Delete outliers when use multibase.

I finally got an idea why the three components time series from PANGA are in different length. Those guys at PANGA group may use a tool behaving like multibase to eliminate outliers. To my surprise, multibase only delete outliers in separate component time series, leaving it difficult to concatenate the N/E/U series into an integral one--the number of epochs of each component for one site may differ.

multibase example:
multibase val -y -max_signe .05 -max_sigu .1

Do you know how ensum handle command-line parameters?

After dig into its source code (~/gg/kf/blsum/ensum.f), I got that this is a trick related to system shell. For a command like "ensum 2 sum val *.org", when call the program ensum, shell (say, csh) just pass all the file names matching "*.org" into the ensum as command-line parameters. Thus, the final calling syntax may look like:
ensum 2 sum val 1.org 2.org 3.org ...

Then, how to know how many files are there?
Just check count the number of non-blank parameters. (For example, it could be supposed that there maybe maximum 10000 *.org files.)

Platform:
  • GPSDC - Dell Precision 390, 1G RAM, Solaris 10 X86, GAMIT/GLOBK 10.32 (????) with Sun Studio 12;
  • GPSAC - Dell Optiplex 755, 4G RAM, RHEL-5_X64, GAMIT/GLOBK 10.32 (????) with Intel Fortran/C Compiler 10.
*Note: The version of GAMIT/GLOBK is different in two systems. The parameters may vary in different sessions.

The data are split into four sessions.
  1. 2000-2001 (gpsac);
  2. 2002-2003 (gpsac);
  3. 2004-2005 (gpsdc);
  4. 2006-2007 (gpsdc).
It took those tow computers one week to complete the solutions.

The resulting time series (combined with SIO igs1/igs2/igs3) have large offsets at the year boundaries of 2002.0, 2004.0, and 2006.0 epochs, especially for North component.

Why those jumps?

Strange uncompress problem.

The rerun script failed to uncompress the igs14523.sp3.Z file. The error is:
igs14523.sp3.Z is not in compressed format.
The same error occurred with file downloaded from CDDIS server. After unzip/zip it in Cygwin, the Solaris 10 X86 uncompress utility worked.
And there is no problem with SOL10X86 in VMWare.

How to combine files column by column?

It's simple--paste.
e.g.:
paste mb_WHJF_GPS.dat1 mb_WHJF_GPS.dat12 mb_WHJF_GPS.dat13 > whjf.neu
Extra work is needed to remove superfluous lines at the beginning of the file, and delete duplicate column. Also, you need add YEAR DOY column to conform to the SIO/NEU convenction.

How to extract certain kinds of files from tared file?

First, here is a example:
$ tar -xf foo.tar --wildcards '*.txt' --no-wildcards '[remarks]'

instructs tar to extract from ‘foo.tar’ all files whose names end in ‘.txt’ and the file named ‘[remarks]’.

Another example:
> gtar zxvf gsoln.v2.tar.gz --wildcards "*.org"
will extract all glorg output files *.org to gsoln directory.

Power outage in the office.

There was a sudden power outage in the office this afternoon. The GPS-DC and GPS-AC servers boot normally after the power was resumed.
GPS-DC: Solaris 10 X86_64
GPS-AC: RHEL5_X86_64
I think they both are great OS.

Windows XP crashed two time recently.

Both cases are related to high load of CPU when VMWare workstation Guest OS was running. Is this a bug of VMware? Or the result of a fatal flaw of XP itself? Or the hardware temperature is too high?

Defnition of Besselian Year

Besselian year.
A quantity introduced by F. W. Bessel in the nineteenth century that has been used into the twentieth century. Bessel introduced a system whereby it would be convenient to identify any instant of time by giving the year and the decimal fraction of the year to a few places, but the starting time of the year was not convenient for dynamical studies that utilize Julian dates (see definition for Julian date), differing by 0.5 day, and the Besselian year varies slowly. The recent change to Julian year usage in dynamical astronomy (and the J2000.0 equinox) took effect in solar-system ephemerides of the Minor Planet Center and Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams on Jan. 1, 1992. (See Julian year.)

Julian date (JD).
The interval of time in days (and fraction of a day) since Greenwich noon on Jan. 1, 4713 BC. The JD is always half a day off from Universal Time, because the current definition of JD was introduced when the astronomical day was defined to start at noon (prior to 1925) instead of midnight. Thus, 1995 Oct. 10.0 UT = JD 2450000.5.

Julian year.
Exactly 365.25 days, in which a century (100 years) is exactly 36525 days and in which 1900.0 corresponds exactly to 1900 January 0.5 (from the Julian-date system, which is half a day different from civil time or UT). The standard epoch J2000.0, now used for new star-position catalogues and in solar-system-orbital calculations, means 2000 Jan. 1.5 Barycentric Dynamical Time (TDB) = Julian Date 2451545.0 TDB. When this dynamical, artificial "Julian year" is employed, a letter "J" prefixes the year.

autcln.out SO large!

It took up all left space of the hard disk.
56G 016/2005 CMONOC@GPSDC
46G 136/2006 BJGPS@GPSAC

What happened?

NOT only project, but ALSO dissertation.

Otherwise, I think I might failed to obtain the degree forever.

Summary paper submitted finally.

O.M.G! It took me so long time to send it out. Waiting for responses. Wish good news.

Why Suse Linux makes it looks like Windows?

And also, set Windows style theme as the default. Is Microsoft Windows the best one? Can't understand! Be just yourself, man.

Setup iPod Touch Win32 Cygwin development environment.

Follow the directions in http://wiki.iphonegameover.com/Windows_Cygwin_Binary_Toolchain_Installation.

To avoid downloading the huge XCode 2.5 image, you could get it directly from rapidshare: http://rapidshare.com/files/66764258/MacOSX10.4u.sdk.rar. Make sure that your iTouch has SSHD installed.

It goes easily if you follow the above directions.

HellWorld test program runs well. Haha... So did the classic helloWorld.c program.

When first start cygwin terminal, it will create a archive of iTouch filesystem:
/private/var/iphone-root-fs.tar
Then download and extract it in cygwin.

It is confirmed that gsac cannot handle the last day of leap years, whether in Windows or Linux/Unix environment.

If it is true, then this is a serious bug. How could this happen?

I can browse GBlog in office.

It's a good news. The internet network in office is much faster sometimes than that in my home.
